Credit cards and credit betting

I'm 62 years old and never had a credit card in my life, I was brought up to believe that if you don't have money to pay for what you want then save it up. I also think it teaches you to look after the money you do have. My golden rule is only gamble up to 20% of what you have, a bit like poker šŸ˜

Also I've never had a credit account with a bookmaker. A friend of mine is an Independent bookie "private" I sometimes phone bets over to him if for example I'm working and can't get to a betting shop but if I lose I will always drop the money off to him on my way home. We're like the sheepdog and the wolf in the old cartoon. šŸ˜ Only once in about 40 years he hasn't been able to pay me my winnings.it was about 35 years ago, I had a Ā£10 forecast up on the horses, it was a 16/1 winner and a 25/1 second, I had about Ā£1200 to come and it was the Monday before the Cheltenham festival. He asked if I could wait until after Cheltenham a d was OK with that. I never had a winner at Cheltenham and my balance was down to Ā£100. In the last race on the final day of the festival I had the Ā£100 on a horse that won at 16/1. We often went to the Victoria Sporting Club together and I remember one time in the early hours of the morning we broke the golden rule and ended up walking the 15 miles or so home from London.Ā

I have debit accounts with Coral, Betfred and PP but NEVER EVER USE THEM TO BET ON HORSES, ONLY SLOTS.Ā

I believe my old man once told me that many years ago casinos wouldnā€™t accept credit cards,Ā and debit cards would be blocked from letting you gamble into an overdraft. Iā€™m not sure how true that is, or maybe my brainā€™s playing tricks on me, but maybe someone can confirm or deny this.

I also remember the days when casinos werenā€™t glorified seafront arcades and there was a dress code and proper membership rules. šŸ™‚

Too right, I remember that the VSC had a strict dress code, no jeans or shorts in those days, you had to wear a tie. No photo ID driving licences so you had to take your passport. I also remember going to Ascot races one icy cold winters day specifically to see Desert Orchid race, I was wearing a roll neck sweater under a heavy overcoat. The bowler hat brigade at the entrance wouldn't let me in without a tie. They sold me a tie which I had to wear over my roll neck sweater to get into the track which I then took off and put in my pocket. Desert Orchid was withdrawn about half an hour before the race. šŸ˜šŸ˜

Credit card or indeed credit betting accounts are a horrific concept. You should never borrow money to gamble itā€™s the route to the poor house.

My dear old Nana called credit cards simply ā€œposh tickā€.....

Read a credit agreement issued by a bank and youā€™ll probably find using the borrowed money for ā€œspeculativeā€ purposes is in fact a breach of that contract.

Debit Card betting is fine as itā€™s your own money your using unless youā€™re rattling the overdraft.

Its a mine field but for my NEVER EVER BORROW MONEY TO GAMBLE!

Trust me, been there, done that, felt the pain it brings.
