Road Trip Recommendations

The wife and I are having a week long road trip starting on Monday with a trip to Weston Super Mare: Tuesday heading somewhere on the south coast of Devon before driving into Cornwall: spending 4 nights based in St Austell: up early on the Saturday and drive to Barry Island staying in Cardiff that night: then again early start and drive to Stratford-upon-Avon followed by a drive home the next morning.

Can anyone recommend any good places to visit during our trip. I already have some arcades lined up in WSM, On the South Coast, and in Barry, plus a trip to Dingles heritage fairground and a trip to the Minack Theatre but we can always fit more in.

I think I have a good balance between gambling emporium's  British seaside resorts, history and culture.

been there a few times, even sent the wife on a cookery course at one of Rick Steins places... That turned into a gamble every time she was in the kitchen for a while lol

Go the Victoria Inn, Salcombe for your South Devon stop is my recommendation. Fabulous quality food at decent prices. All fresh cooked, not a chain menu pre portion nonsense pay about 16 quid for fish and chips sausage and mash burger etc up to 20 25 30 for lamb shanks, pork shoulders, steaks etc

Cheers Dave that might be do-able on the route towards St Austell (about a 1hr de-tour) it certainly looks good and the Crab and slow cooked pork on the dinner menu caught my attention. It's in the sat-nav if time allows... Thanks for the heads-up

I met them about half way through their journey before they headed further West, they are a really nice couple. I'm not sure they are back yet. I loved your recommendation of the Victoria Inn, very specific 🙂

Ha. I was in the South Hams for work last year so go to eat there for free. They sell beer specifically for dogs and they have an open fire. Open fires in pubs are a real plus point for me!

I always assumed that you were London way but if you met them are you West Country or were you just away yourself?

Hi Dave

Just got back as we extended our trip by another couple of days... accommodation was pretty much run of the mill as we only wanted somewhere to sleep and shower each night we made do with Premier Inns and Travel lodges... Had some great meals out but had to for go the Victoria inn as we met up with the legendary Darren on the day we toyed with dropping into Salcombe but we ended up having lunch with Darren between slot playing and time just slipped away (along with the contents of my wallet lol).

The slots were loss making but palatable in Weston Super Mare, Paignton and Barry Island, slightly profitable in St Austell, painfully loss making in the Casino at the Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff (although we were in the place for about 5 hrs) and highly profitable when we hit the NE of the country and good old Seaton and Redcar .... and just to show Darren that Action Bank does pay occasionally...

All in all a different type of excursion moving around like gypsies every day... we might have to check out that land behind stepandstops place next year lol...  but what I can share with the forum members is that Darren lacks the bulging eyes and brown hair portrayed in his caricature.
