The greatest jockey ever has passed away. Some might argue that Willie Shoemaker rode more winners but they forget that in the UK we have flat tracks, undulating tracks, sharp tracks, easy tracks, galloping tracks, left and right handed tracks, in America they’re all round and anti clockwise. My favourite quote from Lester was when after winning the Derby the interviewer asked him at what point did he think he had the race won and Lester replied, “About six months ago”

He was a legend of his sport. When I was a kid, he was the jockey whose name everyone knew. I was sad when I heard of his passing, although I was probably more perturbed by the badly phrased obituary that the BBC gave him….
