Revolut Blocks Credit Card Casino Deposits In Ireland

Revolut, which is an online payment system, announced it is blocking credit card deposits to gambling sites in Ireland. The UK and Ireland generally have an imposed ban on card payments, but casino players apparently circumvented it by using contactless apps like Revolut.

In response Revolut developed a technology that detects when the banking app was funded with a credit card and blocks the payment in case the customer in question is trying to use it to deposit to an online casino.

This decision was made after people aiding gambling addicts called for more stringent measures and described Ireland as the “Wild West” in regards to gambling legislation.

I assume other such systems will introduce similar measures too, if they haven’t already.

I think it’s a good idea. You should never gamble on credit, it’s a road to ruin. I think the same should happen for overdrafts too.

If you have the money, then you should be able to do what you like with it, it’s when you don’t have money and gamble when things go south pretty quickly.

Good on you. Sadly nowadays you can get credit with ridiculous APR on basic household goods. The people who need to get credit for this sort of thing are the least suitable to be able to repay. And if you are in work, put in the overtime, save for a while and buy it outright.

On that note, I saw an advert on YouTube where Deliveroo were offering a ‘buy now, pay later’ deal. It honestly upset me that people may get in financial hardship for a bucket of fried chicken.

On the subject of debt, I was watching my "favourite" slot streamer Chipmonkz the other day, the guy called Gav was streaming from their base in Ireland and the other guy who's called Chip was chatting through an audio stream from the UK. So Chip says to gav can you go to my room and turn the heating off as its very expensive waste of money when the room is not being used. This is the same bloke who only a couple of days before, I was watching losing hundreds of euros on  Danger High Voltage doing €40 spins. Good to see he got his priorities right. 😁
